Class A vs Class C Motorhome: Which Is the Better Auction Buy?
A Class A is built from the frame up on a bare chassis; a Class C is a coach body on a cutaway van cab. For most bidders the Class C is the safer buy: cheaper to fix, easier to comp and easier to resell, while a Class A, especially a diesel pusher, is the bigger discount and the bigger gamble. Class A vs Class C motorhome: what separates them
A Class A is built on a bare motorhome chassis. Gas models mostly ride on a front-engine Ford F53 platform; diesel pushers put the engine in the rear, typically on a Freightliner or Spartan frame, usually with air suspension and air brakes. The body is built from the frame up, and you sit at or ahead of the front axle behind a full-width windshield.
A Class C starts as a cutaway van, usually a Ford E-Series, Chevrolet Express or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The factory cab, doors, dash and airbags stay; the builder adds a coach body behind the cab and the cab-over bunk above it.

Driving, fuel and licensing
A Class A is wide, tall and long, and a crosswind will remind you of it. Gas models carry the engine between the front seats, so the cockpit is loud on grades. Diesel pushers are quiet up front and ride better on air but demand attention to length and tail swing.
A Class C drives like a big van because it is one.
Typical fuel economy is single digits for a gas Class A, roughly 7 to 10 mpg for a diesel pusher, and 8 to 14 mpg for a Class C, depending on engine and length.
Most states allow either class on a standard license, but some states require a special license class or endorsement above a weight or length threshold, so check your state before bidding on a heavy diesel pusher.
Storage, capacity and living space
Class A wins on space: pass-through basement bays, larger tanks, and on diesel pushers often a residential refrigerator, sometimes a washer-dryer, and two to four slides.

Class C is the cheaper of the two to own. Most Ford or Chevrolet dealers with a bay tall enough, and many independent truck and fleet shops, can service the chassis with stock van parts and light-truck tires.
A gas Class A is still widely serviceable, but tires step up to 19.5- or 22.5-inch commercial sizes, with more roof, sealant and slide hardware to keep up.
A diesel pusher moves you into truck-shop territory: high oil capacity, Allison transmission service, air-system upkeep, big tires and, on most engines built to the 2010 emissions standard, a DEF system. Longer service intervals help, but one deferred-maintenance catch-up can rival what you paid at auction.

On diesel pushers, start with the air system. Leaks at fittings, tired ride-height valves and a neglected air dryer show up as slow pressure build-up or a coach sagging on one corner overnight. Hydraulic leveling jacks and slide pumps leak with age, and side-mounted radiators clog with oil mist and road dirt.

Gas or diesel, a Class A carries a very large roof: more seams, vents and skylights to fail, plus front and rear cap joints that open as the body flexes. Every slide adds seals, toppers and motors that can fail.
Common failure points on a Class C
The cab-over is the weak spot. The seams where the front cap meets the roof and sidewalls, and the bunk window if there is one, let water in first. Look for stains on the bunk ceiling, soft plywood under the mattress, and delamination on the sidewalls, which shows as waves or bubbles in the fiberglass.
Check the floor near the entry door and bathroom for soft spots, then look at the van. Many Class Cs run near their rated weight every mile, so front-end parts, suspension and brakes wear faster than on an empty van. Former rentals are common at auction and often carry high mileage and hard use.
Depreciation: which class holds value
Both classes lose value fast in the first few years. Diesel pushers shed the most dollars because they start highest; gas Class As are often the softest segment on a percentage basis.
Class C tends to hold a larger share of its value: cheap to buy and fix, with the widest pool of buyers, so an older unit still trades. A 20-year-old Class C on a Ford chassis remains a viable purchase; a 20-year-old diesel pusher can be worth less than its deferred maintenance.
